Diary of Mexican imprisonment : Mexico, 1842 Oct 16-1843 Dec 3.

Holograph diary, dating from October 16, 1842 to December 3, 1843, in which Trueheart describes his experiences as a prisoner of Mexico after his capture in San Antonio by General Woll. The diary documents his march with other prisoners from Monclova to Perote, Mexico, and his imprisonment at the "Perote Castle." Trueheart describes his daily activities during the march and in prison, lists names of other prisoners held at the castle, and comments on news received regarding the continuing conflict between Texas and Mexico. Laid in is a sheet containing a list of one day's rations for fifty-nine men, signed James L. Trueheart and dated August 17, 1843; a photocopy of James L. Trueheart's one-page oath of identity dated May 28, 1874; and a one-page photocopy of part of a legal document regarding a claim against the Republic of Texas dated July 21, 1851.

James L. Trueheart came to Texas from Virginia in 1838, settled in San Antonio in 1841, and became Clerk of the District Court. In September 1842, Trueheart was among the Texans captured by General Adrian Woll at San Antonio. He was imprisoned in "Perote Castle" (Castillo de San Carlos, Perote, Mexico), and released on March 22, 1844. Trueheart returned to San Antonio, and later was elected to County and State offices.
